DR, thanks for the link. It appears to me the Sierra Wireless solution utilizes a ground based wireless/cellular connection which seemingly does not make it any better than a Wifi hotspot provided by one's phone. My thought is the OnStar solution benefits from its satellite connection to a ground based system making the WiFi connection available anywhere, even where no ground towers exist within range of the vehicle.

the only satellite connectivity in on-star and others is GPS positioning that feeds into Nav and other apps. They all use the terrestrial cellular network for voice and data connectivity (and backhaul for the integrated wifi).

Yes…phones can become hotspots for devices in the vehicle…but the integration of the cellular component with a wifi component into the vehicle allows greater reliability and additional value added apps.

It all comes down to money…. if you like the value add of having it integrated into your vehicle and are willing to pay the extra subscription fee…then you do it. If not, then you continue using your phone. Many of the new systems rolling off the factory floor give you a free year of service… most people do not continue the service after year 1 because they don't want to pay an extra fee for it.
