Operation Eastern Exit was the codename given to the military evacuation of the United States embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia during the Somali Civil War. In late December 1990, violence quickly enveloped Mogadishu as the central government collapsed. On 2 January 1991, the US Ambassador to Somalia requested military assistance to evacuate the embassy, which was successfully evacuated on 5–6 January. In total, 281 diplomats and civilians from 30 countries were evacuated, including 10 heads of missions (eight ambassadors and four chargés d'affaires).
