Word has gone out that on March 9, 2015 Apple will be launching something new here in the U.S. Apparently, they are now going to be taking on watches. In a new 12 page ad featured in U.S. March Vogue magazine, Apple is marketing this watch not only as a groundbreaking innovative must have for the tech set but as a fashion requirement for fashionistas in the know. The lowest-end Apple Watch will cost $349. Of course great marketing along with a brand name such as Apple helps sell a product that at the end of the day, do we really need? My answer is a resounding no. But, I too buy into the charisma and pulse that a new item brings with it. The cache of owning something so new makes the psyche feel good. But, here in lies the importance of a marketing and communications company. You see the name Apple can only carry the item’s vale so far. It will certainly be seen and read about but will people buy it? Do they really want it? Do they need it? To effectively make consumers take purchasing action, smart marketers first educate the consumer and then market to them.
