I agree with your statement that says that's not have business math works. However, this is clearly a startup company and creating a ridiculous number of product with no clear cut market for the device would be insane. Keeping the number of units produces is both smarter and more realistic from a startup perspective.

With interest will come further sales and further lines of the product. The interest will be there as marketing comes about. This marketing and media promotion isn't meant to sell 5000 units. It's designed to sell many more in the future and get the word out about the product SO THAT THERE WILL BE MORE TO COME.

5000 preorders from investors only is also unrealistic like you say and I agree. I do believe, however, that 5000 units will definitely sell out fast between investors and the public who will soon learn about the product.
