Because he is an idiot and so isn't the person who wrote that little story to try to make a point. The old man is trying to teach a lesson to someone who is trying to do some good and help someone and he's trying to teach a stranger a lesson on his front porch. He's being a crank - if he wants to say no then say no thanks and shut the F up about it. He's not he parent.
