Sad history, a history that most Americans, especially in the South, would rather sweep under the rug. I don't recall much mention of these atrocities in the history text books we were assigned in school. I remember a whole chapters dedicated to Yankee Carpetbaggers and the exploitation of the South... peculiar. Not sure about the numbers, but it is still a blight on white Americans.
