WOW, that must-have-been totally harrowing and scary...
Ya did exactly the right thing in response to the sighting,
of course...and you knew that.
Just freeze and perhaps very-slowly (while facing the animal but
not necessarily staring into its eyes...just facing it) start to
back-pedal. VERY slowly!
I too KNOW THIS because -- Yes! -- something very similar, for
the one and only time in my life, happened with me, in the mid-1990's
when walking with one friend along a fairly well-driven but unpaved
local road in the Christmas-tree-scented evergreen woods of the
Pacific NW (appx. 25 miles outta Seattle metro area).
It happened with me, yup.
And today, HERE I AM!
(I just said that last thing on purpose, so y'all can LAFF and
come up with clever and snarky replies about my Earthly presence etc.)
