Seeing-thru futurist BS:
"The real difference between real futurist insight and futuristic bulls**t is this: the bulls**t artists don’t know the context. They can’t tell you the pros and cons of everything in the emerging space......If you only study one field, you really aren’t a futurist. Why? You’ll miss accidental patterns.....Turns out that even researchers can’t tell the real future, even when it’s right in front of them. This stuff is hard.....Other things that separate the real future from the bulls**t? The real futurists build things with their knowledge.....Another difference between the real thing and the bulls**t artists? The real futurists build systems to get the future to come to them.....Fake futurists don’t think this way." https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/seeing-through-futuristic-bullst-robert-scoble?trk=tod-home-art-list-small_1
So, to wrap it up. Here’s some homework:
1. Are you listening to the future? Do you follow investors, pioneers, developers, artists, musicians, innovators, who are pushing the future forward?
2. Are you doing things that get the future to come to you? Start with something simple, like a dinner at a conference. Can you get people who are pushing your industry forward to that?
3. Are you thinking about where your industry will be in a decade and pitching projects to your bosses that will get your company there? (I’m on the way to Rackspace to meet with our best customers and then I’m going to pitch some ideas about the future of cloud computing to our execs. I’ve ALWAYS learned something about Rackspace when I do that).
4. Are you sharing what you learn with others? The only way to really know something is to teach it to others. Plus, it increases chances that others who want to work on that will chase you and want to join you in building the future.
5. Are you studying the future in non-related fields? Have you been to an EDM concert? Have you been to an innovative restaurant? Have you crashed a conference that’s talking about something you have no knowledge of? Have you read a book about the future? (I might suggest my own, “Age of Context” available on Amazon).
6. Do you study people who build the future, like Elon Musk?
7. Are you building your own filters to discern between legitimate futurists and bulls**t artists?
If so, let me know who you are. I’m looking for the future. The future of tech. The future of art. The future of food. The future of music. The future of fashion. The future of life.
