News: Xiaomi May Use Sapphire for Smartphone Covers

December 23, 2014 - Xiaomi Technology may use sapphire for covers of its Xiaomi 5, 5.7-inch smartphone to be unveiled at 2015 CES, according to supply chain sources, as reported by DigiTImes.

If Xiaomi decides to adopt sapphire, existing sapphire production capacity is not sufficient to meet the demand, according to sources with Taiwan-based sapphire wafer makers. Sources report China's Lens Technology and Biel Crystal Manufactory have expanded sapphire production capacity.

Maybe Xiaomi Technology could use some GTAT furnaces to meet production demands? This could be a great opportunity for GTAT to sell furnaces!
