I'm kidding about buying 3M at 2 3/4. You're older than I am. I started buying stocks early in college. It cost >2% to buy and >2% to sell in those days. Taxes were high. No one I knew traded much. Orders were placed by phone or sometimes in person. Mutual funds often charged 8 1/2% to buy. Most would buy a stock and hold for years. I learned the craft from millionaires not gambling addicts.

Very interesting about Scotch Tape and 3M in the 1950s.
