Entirely correct! That is the exact definition of a Riskless principle transaction. The MM shorted into the buy that came along and then covered from Investor's "sell".
And presto...a LONG trade gets marked short because the first leg was a short sale...but no short interest results because it was covered the moment the shares were bought from his account.
As you say...happens all the time in the pinks. Especially no bid stocks.
