That is also a possibility. Defective or corrupt ads cause a lot of problems.

But it doesn't explain why some people got emails, unless… We know that whoever updates the Carlton Huxley timeline removed the original link from that site. Perhaps he thought sending out the email was a good idea, but if so, he should have identified himself clearly in the header.
