ARM seeing troubles penetrating into PC, server industries; IoT becomes new battlefield for Intel, ARM

Despite aggressively attempting to advance into the PC and server industries, ARM-based CPU platforms will not be able to achieve any significant results within the next two years in the two segments; however ARM and Intel have found a new business opportunities in the Internet of things (IoT) segment and both expect growth in that area, according to sources from the supply chain.

The sources pointed out that although the PC market is no longer enjoying strong shipment growth as in the past, some demand for PCs that originally was taken by mobile devices in recent years, has started to return.

While AMD has not achieved much PC market share growth in recent years, Intel, which has a 80% share in the PC market, is expected to maintain good gross margins from the business despite its weak performance in the mobile device business.

Although ARM originally hoped to cross into the PC market with help from Windows RT, compatibility issues with existing Windows-based programs and a lack of apps have halted its advance.

With most servers available in the market still using x86-based processors, as well as the related software/hardware applications running on the hardware, Intel's domination in the industry is unlikely to be affected in the short term, especially considering the long lifetime of servers.

However, as the IoT industry is growing popular recently, ARM and Intel have both placed their focus on the business opportunity and have been developing cloud computing solutions and apps to connect handsets, tablets, PCs and servers.
