Politics of Fear Create an America of Ignorance, Says Study
Blue Nation Review
By Brendan Quinn

Compared to the rest of the developed world, it turns out Americans are pretty ignorant. That is according to findings by Ipsos MORI, a leading research company based in the UK.

In a study conducted throughout the summer and published on October 29, Ipsos MORI tested the knowledge of the citizenry of 14 countries (Italy, the US, South Korea, Poland, Hungary, France, Canada, Belgium, Australia, Great Britain, Spain, Japan, Germany, and Sweden) to see how close to reality their perceptions of their country were. The survey included questions focusing on topics such as the rates of teen pregnancy, immigration, murder, and unemployment occurring in each country. Across the board, a majority of those surveyed tended to see a far graver version of their countries than actually existed – believing in higher unemployment rates, rising incidences of murder, and lower numbers of voter turnout.

One of the countries doing the worst in the survey? – that’s right, the good old U.S. of A., coming in at number 2. The only country to do worse was Italy. Is this really the impression we want to give to the world? Number 2 in ignorance? After this month’s elections, which saw the lowest voter turnout in recent history, I’m not sure that we can expect to be doing better anytime soon.

Unfortunately, we live in a country where one of the most popular news sources appears to leave viewers less informed than when they started, and our elected officials are more focused on creating environments of fear than they are on actually helping people.

Rather than focus on positive numbers and figures, Americans follow their leaders down the rabbit hole, turning their attention to immigrants, Ebola, or whatever the new “scare of the month” is. This culture of fear is creating an atmosphere that gives people the impression that 32% of us are unemployed, 24% of our teenage girls are pregnant (those are actual findings of the survey) and that Obama is going to let immigrants take over the Supreme court and give us all gay Ebola.

Reality, however, shows a much different story. Unemployment rates are actually dropping, more marriage bans and other LGBTQ restrictions are being struck down each week, support for rational drug policies is getting higher (lol), and violent crime rates continue to decline. We become so incensed by fear that we become blind to the fact that our country is actually moving forward, and positive things are being accomplished. We have such a negative view on the state of our country that eagerly accept false figures that make it seem like we are failing.

Don’t give in, readers, please – take note of and share the positive things that are taking place in our country. Its not all that bad. REALLY

Sadly, for a statistics rich laugh:
