it can either be an alternative to an existing product or a new product that contributes (or saves) more than it costs.

the bobbing and weaving might also involve product adjustment. maybe vsc 2.0 is close to being saleable, but a 2.1 is necessary to make the orders flow. he may think he has designed the perfect product but then he has dozens of pilots and no bites - maybe he has to do some further tweaking. maybe he needs to throw in something else that makes vsc's value obvious. bobbing and weaving means being more flexible than an original constructionist might be.
