Scientists at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Decision (USAMRIID) have informed Hemispherx BioPharma, Inc (HEB) that they have recently conducted in vitro tests (trials conducted outside a living organism) using Alferon and Ampligen.

It was announced that Alferon -an alpha interferon- protects human cells against the Ebola virus, and has been approved for commercial sale in the US. In low doses, Hemispherx’s Ampligen can also defend human cells against the viral disease.

While Alefron is used to treat genital warts in patients aged 18 and above, Ampligen is a "new class of specifically-configured ribonucleic acid compounds targeted as potential treatment of diseases with immunologic defects and/or viral causation," according to a press release by USAMRIID.

USAMRIID plans on conducting tests using both drugs to discover their efficacy. If the synergy proves fruitful, the drugs will be put through clinical trials. USAMRIID will be looking for the right composition of both Alferon and Ampilgen to successfully prevent the human body from the Ebola virus.

Previously, similar published studies have been conducted using a combination of Ampligen and alpha interferon for the treatment of HIV.

Following the news, Hemispherx stock is up 8.6% in pre-market trading on Monday.
