Some minor procedures can be done with tetracaine drops in the clinic. More complicated procedures require at minimum the addition of sedatives (MAC - monitored anesthesia care).

Maurie Hill stated some details about her procedure including that a vitrectomy was done. This type of procedure typically involves the addition of an IV sedative but like many things can be patient specific.

Personally I would prefer IV sedation if I were having this done.
