The Japanese didn't have radar. At Guadalcanal
it was the kamikazes that did most of the damage and killing.

Being shot at on a ship is scary. There's no place to go. When I was on a destroyer, actually a WWII destroyer although modernized, in Viet Nam we had to go within a mile of shore for gunfire support. And the bastards shot back!! Although we could defend against missiles dodging bullets was tricky. Especially 500 lb dumb bombs dropped by Migs. My ship was lucky they missed.
