AMC Networks Inc. (AMCX) is acquiring a 49.9% stake in BBC America, taking control of affiliate and advertising sales for the cable channel that is home to "Doctor Who," "Orphan Black" and "Top Gear."

KLA-Tencor Corp. (KLAC) plans to pay a special cash dividend and buy back more of its shares, the company said Thursday. The announcement came as the company reported better-than-expected results for its first quarter.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) continues to defy expectations by growing at a much faster clip than its business-technology peers, while the company also managed to post stronger-than-forecast sales in its troubled Nokia mobile business.

NPS Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NPSP) said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has extended the company's Prescription Drug User Fee Act action date for the company's experimental hormone drug to Jan. 24 from Friday.

Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. (NDAQ) said its earnings rose 8.9% as the firm's focus on expense control helped offset the effect of foreign exchange and other pressures on its top line.

State Street Corp. (STT) said its profit rose 2.1% as growth in fee revenue boosted its top line.
