One of China’s biggest alcohol producers, Wuliangye, has made an unconventional move – it is entering the - animal feed business. But no, cattle won’t be drinking China’s famous five-grain alcohol. Instead, Wuliangye aims to take the - waste from its distillation process & turn it in to a commercially viable, protein-rich feed for cattle, pigs & fish. The state-owned beverage giant enlisted New Hope Liuhe, a unit of China’s biggest animal feed producer & agribusiness, as one of its business partners. Though starting small, they plan to ramp up over several years of time with an total investment of US$118 million (RMB 772.8 million) & annual yearly production of 500,000 tons of feed. By stepping in to the - animal feed business, the - national liquor brand could be creating a small-scale answer in addressing the - much larger food security issue of China. As China seeks to feed its 1.3 billion-strong population, it 1st needs to feed the - livestock in that produce meat, eggs, & milk. Already, China is producing 50% of the - pork & 70% of the - fish in the - world. Having access to animal feed is crucial to support an enormous industry in animal husbandry & aquaculture. The sheer quantity of feed required can be daunting. Reportedly an estimate by Ren Jizhou, a scholar in agriculture at the - China Academy of Engineering, the - Chinese population consumes 200 million tons of food per year, while the - demand for animal feed is about 500 million tons. In order to ensure an adequate supply of feed, China needs to allocate land & water resources, which are already scarce. The country moreover has to maintain a logistical network to grow, produce & distribute the - feed, or else depend on imports. Animal feed is therefore a crucial yet under-appreciated dimension in China’s food security puzzle. The demand for feed creates enormous business opportunity. …
