Microsoft made their OS free for low-end machines and perhaps they have some space optimizations for Windows 8.1.

USB 2.0 isn't necessarily that bad. I was testing Mavericks off a Firewire 400 drive last night and performance was fine for testing my office connection from home.

There are a lot of people that need to do basic computing on a budget and these things seem to fit the bill. It's also protection from ARM devices and even iPads.

I'm glad to see more Intel Chromebooks but Chromebooks don't have x86 lock-in like Windows has.
