If a landlord can't get in, the individual window glass itself does not get blackened on the outside, unless opaque film is applied (most landlords do not take the time/expense to do this, and longevity is an issue). Usually a single panel of something is put over all the frame/sash area -crude, but effective.

Not that any of this matters to me.
