A 3rd pattern that appears to be emerging is the use of GKG as a secondary feedstock.

I remember that early discussions on GKG speculated that biomass power plants would not want to rely on remainders because their availability and cost would not be consistent from year to year. The thinking was that they would be attracted to creating a devoted energy crop for this reason. This may be occurring in places, but in regards to GKG, most project descriptions talk about it being used as a secondary feedstock or in conjunction with some other feedstock. The Sagay PR talked about GKG being used initially to supplement sugar bagasse in its boiler. The Harmony Gold project is focusing on using sugar beets as the lead plant with GKG as a secondary. The Mesquite Lake Power Plant project PRs talked about using wood debris as the primary feedstock with GKG as a secondary as needed. Tibbar plans to feed other biomatter and waste to its biodigester in addition to GKG.

While it would be nice for GKG be the sole feedstock for a project, it actually may broaden its opportunities to by being an option for situations where the primary feedstock is insufficient. For example, not only is Sagay considering it as an option for itself, but supplying it to other sugar mills who could benefit from having a secondary feedstock.
