Her particular problem was in 4.2 and 4.3 and fixed in 4.4. But she'd have to jailbreak and the jailbreak is flaky due to GPU device driver issues. Doesn't sound like it's worth it to look into it. The hardware is fine though.

In some cases it's the carrier that doesn't do the updates (they take Android and add their own stuff) and in our case it's Google. The carriers want you to upgrade your phones so you'll stay with them and I guess Google would rather you upgrade too even though they probably don't make anything on the sale of the phone.

I would have been fine using my iPhone 5 for another two years but I have the iPhone 6 and will use it for the next two years and perhaps a few years beyond that. This hardware upgrade was worth it for me with Touch ID and the additional sensors. I'm still getting used to the size but I find that I don't carry my iPad Mini around with me anymore.
