I like to use a keyboard, touchpad, mouse combination on a desktop with three monitors. The touchpad puts less stress on your hand while allowing you to move quickly and also to use multitouch gesture. The mouse allows you to do fine-detail work.

If you have three monitors on your desk at 24 inches, then they are likely far enough away so that you really don't want to reach out and touch them.
