Next Biometrics has a new touch sensor.

September 29, 2014 - Next Biometrics has launched its new touch area sensor for mobile, tablet and notebook markets.

The new touch area sensor is 30% smaller than Next Biometrics’ current offering, measuring at a size of 144 square mm compared to 201 square mm.

Despite the smaller size, Next Biometrics notes that market trends are currently projecting that customers will move away from smallest sensors in 2015 and 2016.

“It ´s about maximizing user convenience without sacrificing security,” said Next Biometrics CEO Tore Etholm Idsøe. “The user demands a sensor that works every day in all common use cases. The fundamentals of fingerprinting dictates a certain minimum sensor size. There are many sources of false rejections, like dirt, water drops, dry, cut or worn fingers. These problems escalate exponentially with reduced sized sensors.”

When positioned in the rear, there is still space available for a larger sensor size allowing room for applications like corporate access control, payments and cloud access.

The touch area sensors are priced 25-35% lower than offerings from Next Biometrics’ small format competitors, said Etholm Idsøe.

Next Biometrics Group ASA recently announced it established hardware and software partnerships with BIO-key International.
