There comes a time when you have to ask yourself: How useless are you when the best way to keep your job is not to show up at work? That's the question we find ourselves asking about congress now, and it's a fair one. But it does come with an admission: The Tea Party is, at the moment, winning. They set out to destroy the Federal government, hired seditious saboteurs to do exactly that, and now one of those branches of government is an utter failure. Victory: Tea Party.
Rachel Maddow slams Congress for going on vacation so they can focus on getting re-elected… and to avoid being forced into voting on anything that could jeopardize that. Image: Video screen grab/MSNBC.
In this clip, Rachel Maddow tears into The Tea Party's deliberate Worst Congress in History. The center of her outrage is that Congress, after a whole eight days in service, has decided to take off for another two months to focus on what's really important: getting re-elected. A duty for which we, the taxpayers, are still paying them $476 a day.
Granted, Congress' eight days in office hasn't been entirely useless. They did manage to approve a new war in Syria. Congress' "swift action" was praised by Obama…at least in the same sense one might praise a young child for successfully wiping his ass. But praise is praise, and a Congressman's first job is to keep his job, whether he's actually doing that job or not.
But, you know…that's pretty much what the Tea Party had in mind when they hired them.
"Sixteen-hundred US military families have gotten the call that they've had their loved ones deployed to Iraq, they're flying those missions right now. But Congress? Heading home for another seven week break, because they can't be bothered to think about that right now. They've got more important business to tend to they've gotta get re-elected. Because that's the most important thing they do, right?
There's a reason the American public finds this Congress so repellent. There's a reason this Congress has the lowest rating of any Congress in history, and in the spectrum of all major institutions in our country. There's a reason Congress - THIS Congress - repulses the people of the United States. But a decision like this, today, stretches the bounds of even the low standard of decency that they have sunk to already."
