GM Crops and Sterilization

Using genetically modified plants to control the human population sounds a bit like Orwellian paranoia, but when you start looking at the different camps, the pro-GMO field boils down to just a few possibilities; unapologetic greed, stubborn ignorance, or government conspiracy.

The (chemical) companies manufacturing the genetically modified seeds are the greedy ones. Not only are they against mandatory labeling of GMO’s, but they also have the FDA and USDA in their back pocket who won’t even allow food manufacturers to claim their products are GMO free. (For an interesting read, check out the link between Monsanto and the Fed) To add insult to injury, the FDA does not perform safety tests on genetically engineered foods.

If GMO products are so advantageous for farmers, why is there no boasting about product superiority to the consumer? Instead they oppose the consumers right to know with their ant-labeling stance. There are also no long term studies that prove GMO food is safe and without health consequence, but there is enough independent study data out there for the general public to be concerned. At best this is greed. At it’s worst, it’s negligent greed.

Then there’s the first half of the ignorant camp which is the uninformed folks. They either don’t know or refuse to believe in the possibility that a food industry failure could happen on such a grand scale. The second half of this group is the people who are aware of the studies that reveal enough to raise a few eyebrows, but as a good subordinate does, they stick with their beliefs while citing cherry picked scientific studies about the safety of GMO’s.

Now imagine if there was a dastardly plan to control or at least stunt the human population. Yes, it seems far fetched, but there have been a few studies where the third and fourth generation of animals fed genetically modified foods have become completely sterile and unable to reproduce.

How do you decelerate an exploding population without openly violating a human right (family size selection) such as China’s family planning policy? You allow genetically modified foods to be introduced to the consumer with no safety tests, long term studies, or labels indicating this modification.

The kicker is it takes a few generations to start seeing the effect of a slowing birth rate. With mice or pigs we can see the generational effect rather quickly, but with humans it would naturally take much longer and therefore harder to pinpoint the initial catalyst.

Without people standing up today and demanding the need for testing, long term studies, and labeling, where will we be a half century from now? What general practitioner is going to suggest to his patients that the reason they can’t have children is because of their great grandparents diet?

The only thing we can hope for is that people will continue to pressure politicians and food manufacturers into either labeling or using unaltered seeds. It would be sad to see this turn into another tobacco industry situation where we don’t realize the damage we’re doing until it’s too late.

I can’t say for sure if GMO foods is a subversive act set in motion by the power elite, but it is a rather guilty pleasure of mine contemplating whether or not there’s actually such destructive ideas being thrown around (or implemented) by world leaders. (Must be the screenwriter in me, always looking for ideas) All I’m saying is, (as sad as this is to admit), it would not surprise me if it were true.
