There's definitely more than one way to make out with the market. My method is to not wait for much of a pullback if I think the stock has around as much or more % upside potential as it has already gone up(CSIQ is up 65%, but I think it could go up another 50% easily. My experience is quite different from yours, and the majority of the time, the stocks I buy don't do a major pullback after I buy. If they do retrace more than I expected, I just buy more. I do get quite overextended short term sometimes doing that, but it's worked out well for the last 10 years.
