I am in the avoid individual stock camp. Use ETFs. I have only gotten in trouble with individual stocks never with ETFs.

All Vanguard ETFs can be traded free at Vanguard. TD AMERITRADE HAS 100 ETFs you can trade for free.

Next decission is to invest by style (large, small, foreign, etc) or by industry.

Decide what you want to own the rest of your life and invest in the worst performing ones first as you have funds.

I suggest a minimum of $20,000 per fund to start. $10,000 stock and $10,000 cash as I dont have any more idea which way the market is headed than you do. That creates a min first trade size of $500. It just is not worth trading less than that.

Aim will take care of when to buy or sell after that.

If you do the above, you wont have to worry about asking any more questions on this board.
