Hi Ayock, the problem is back in your grandmothers time, smokestacks were EVERYWHERE, companies simply dumped God knows what into our rivers, and forests were cut down without any thought of replanting.
Of course in the 1980s and 1990s what used to be woods and farmland 20 miles away from our major cities became sterile suburban housing developments .... bought be the same people who made a big deal out of "Earth Day", lol. Who then had to drive there cars 30 - 60 minutes to work or several miles just to get groceries.
