It goes much further back than 50 years...I remember my grandmother who lived in a very small town in the upper midwest (think 5 minute Greyhound stop) who went through serial cloth shopping bags and the little cart to put them on from daily use. She walked 3 blocks to and from the only grocery store in town well into her 80's.
Only thing she had delivered was the ice for the oak "icebox". Wish the family still had it...
