And extreme actions, like gunning the engine hard and then slamming quickly into first gear, can lead to some unfortunate results. "The gears literally break in pieces," Kaplan said.
Seems to me to be a problem with the material of construction. I'm sure a heat treat expert could figure out how to make the surface strong enough.
