In my experience thus far, those bogus articles and ads pop up... every year.

And as far as if all stocks would be hit, well, each one is rather unique - so different variables get involved. Just realize that if war or famine etc. break out that affect a major market sector, it will often drag down other sectors as well - unless there is a major catalyst already in sway for a specific ticker.
