The first way is by passively absorbing antibodies directed at the full-length GP. Full-length GP and sGP share many structural features, so antibodies directed against the full-length GP can be tricked into binding the decoy sGP.

But, there's a second, more insidious way that sGP can subvert the immune response. It can trigger the proliferation of B-cells (antibody-producing cells) that preferentially bind sGP. In other words, sGP redirects the immune response to produce antibodies more suitable for binding the decoy sGP, not the full-length GP. Because so much sGP is produced by Ebola, this decoy protein skews the immune response toward attacking it, leaving the full-length GP on its surface free of neutralizing antibodies and, hence, free to attack host cells. The authors refer to this new pathogenic mechanism as "antigenic subversion."

The researchers caution that such viral treachery may have implications for vaccine design.

The United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases conducted a monkey to monkey Ebola study in December 1995, published in The Lancet, Vol 346, which conclusively demonstrated it.

“We report transmission of Ebola virus (Zaire strain) to two of three control rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) that did not have direct contact with experimentally inoculated monkeys held in the same room. The two control monkeys died from Ebola virus infections at 10 and 11 days after the last experimentally inoculated monkey had died. The most likely route of infection of the control monkeys was aerosol, oral or conjunctival exposure to virus-laden droplets secreted or excreted from the experimentally inoculated monkeys... The exact mode of transmission to the control monkeys cannot be absolutely determined, although the pattern of pulmonary antigen staining in one of the control monkeys was virtually identical to that reported in experimental Ebola virus aerosol infection in rhesus monkeys, suggesting airborne transmission of the disease via infectious droplets... Fomite or contact droplet transmission of the virus between cages was considered unlikely. Standard procedures in our BL4 containment laboratories have always been successful in the prevention of transmission of Ebola or Marburg virus to uninflected animals. Thus, pulmonary, nasopharyngeal, oral, or conjunctival exposure to airborne droplets of the virus had to be considered as the most likely mode of infection... Our present findings emphasize the advisability of at-risk personnel employing precautions to safeguard against ocular, oral, and nasopharyngeal exposure to the virus."

It appears to me that the Public Health Agency of Canada has engaged in politically correct pseudoscience regarding the transmission of Ebola.

The spread of Ebola to the U.S. will likely happen due to international air travel, CDC head Frieden warned. Today's Ebola outbreak is the largest ever recorded in history. Is the CDC perhaps preparing America for an announcement that Ebola is now being found in U.S. patients?
...
Yes, we may be able to provide "state of the art care" for a handful of people, but if thousands (or millions) of Americans get the virus you can forget about it. Our health industry is already stretched incredibly thin, and we simply do not have the resources to handle a tsunami of high risk Ebola patients. And of course conventional medicine does not have a cure for Ebola anyway.

If the government has a strategy for the middle-east you can bet your life government has a strategy for Ebola. Throw a little taxpayers money (taxpayer debt) after the problem!?! Better now than never!
