According to the website MedicineNet.com, drug discovery is a very time-consuming process:

Preclinical testing takes on average 31/2 years.

Phase 1 clinical trials take on average 1 year.

Phase 2 clinical trials take on average 2 years.

Phase 3 clinical trials take on average 3 years.

Only 5 in 5000 drugs that enter preclinical testing progress to human testing and only 1 of those 5 receive final FDA approval.

Bottom line: Big Pharma, whose pipelines have dried up and patents are expiring, have a lot more money than time.
