Police: Woman suffers head injuries in random downtown assault

SEATTLE -- A woman suffered head injuries and memory loss in a random assault at a busy downtown intersection Saturday afternoon near Pike Place Market, according to the Seattle Police Department.

According to the police report for the incident, the victim was at the corner of First Avenue and Pine Street around 4:35 p.m. when a man ran up to her and punched her in the head. The victim fell and hit her head on the sidewalk.

A witness called 911, and officers arrived to find the victim lying on the sidewalk with a 1-inch cut to her chin and no memory of what happened. She repeatedly asked officers what day and time it was and was immediately rushed to the hospital.

The witness told officers the man and victim had no interaction prior to the attack, and the man ran off into Pike Place Market afterward.

Officers searched the area but were unable to find the man.

Employees at the nearby clothing store where the victim works told officers the victim had worked that day but hadn't had any incidents with anyone matching the description of the attacker.

Later at the hospital, the victim told officers she recalled being harassed by a man near where the attack occurred.
