Listening to NPR on the way to work this morning, and they had a story about some judgment that had been reached about the juvenile justice system in Memphis.

It seems a "statistical analysis" revealed a bias in how the courts treated white and non-white offenders. The statistics indicate that non-whites were twice as likely to be tried as an adult, and other such things that some people found to be evidence of bias.

Then as the real person example of this unfair system, they focus in on an 18 year old black man in the court. This "poor child" does not have a parent or guardian to stand behind him in the court, he's got some court appointee. He has no connection to any parent. He's been charged with carjacking, and the NPR announcer seems to think I should feel sympathy for this poor child, and be outraged that he is being transferred to adult court.

Carjacking.

Apparently, I'm wrong to think a carjacker should be punished. Rather, I'm supposed to feel guilty, because I didn't serve this poor youth enough, to give him some other outlet besides crime to express his potential. At least that was the spin on the story. An under-served youth is starting life as a felon because I'm a racist, not because he stuck a gun in an innocent person's face and tried to steal their car.

I do feel guilty. I feel guilty about hating progressives. I don't think I used to be a hateful person, but I guess my tolerance for stupid has been exhausted.
