Again no disrespect to you

None taken, but you have to understand that “profit” is not what a grant is. Profit defined:

1. a financial gain, especially the difference between the amount earned and the amount spent in buying, operating, or producing something.

If Schott receives grant money, that simply is not profit. It might be free money, but to what end? The money will be used for all manner of R&D, but it has to be spent and not pocketed as “profit”. Now there are reasons to do R&D, but one of them isn’t because you got some ‘free money’. Engineers, scientists and researchers are a limited resource and an expense, you don’t waste their time simply paying them free grant money unless there is a likelihood that a tangible product will be the result of the research, in this case a glass image chamber. THEN the opportunity for profit comes, and the definition above will apply. That is why Schott in in this, they will develop glass which they then can sell. Do they want someone else to pay for the R&D? Of course, who would not? But there is no way Schott is going to waste the limited time of their engineers and scientists milking a project simply because the money to pay for it is free. That is ridiculous.
