You are referring to something like the chipmunk crushers. They are for lab use. At best they can only do 25 to 50 Lbs in an 8 hour day. They generally do crush to anything finer than about 1/8 of an inch. Then you will be buy a lab grinder to get to the 300 mesh. They are even slower than the crushers.

The old timers built stamp mills to pulverize the quartz. They weren't very efficient but were cheap to build and operate. When ever they could they used a water wheel and when water wasn't available they would use steam. They then used gravity to separate the gold and they learned that wasn't that efficient either so they ended up treating the tailings with cyanide.
