So his demotion was because of his strengths. What a joke. He succeeded on 5 pct of his own stated goals. Business 101 says he should have been fired with a record like that. It's OK. Thrashing about looking for a rationalization for one's investment is a common mistake made by many businessman. It takes a lot of disciine to ignore past mistakes and make current decisions based on current facts is the basic rule of sunk costs.
