Our company was looking for an architect to build a golf course. I chose Rees Jones. I set up our criteria for the course and then it was discussed in depth. The main design features I wanted were as follows:
1. No water within 125 yds of the fairways for each hole unless the water was 75 yds behind both greens and tees.
2. All greens were tilted towards the front with no humps or ridges.
3. Green size was between 3500 & 5000 sq ft.
4. No sand bunker was deeper than 2', none were directly in front of the green and preferred to the sides.
5. Vast majority of bunkers were to be grass at a grass height of no more than 3".
6. No forced layups.
7. Three tees-6700, 6100 and 5700 yds.
8. Par 3's could not exceed 190 yds. Par 4's were no longer than 425. No par 5 longer than 530.
9. The rough could not exceed 3" and fairways were at least 35 yds wide.
10. No dogleg could exceed 30 degrees and had no blind bunkers at the doglegs.

Rees did not agree on these basic restrictions so we never built the course.
