My office sat empty for 4 years with just me in it. Various people tried to jump in but with no profits and ability to pay them, they jumped out.
Finally got a customer in 2012, ran into an unexpected brick wall outside of my control and they bailed. Got a second customer in 2013, government shutdown spooked them and they held the contract for 6 months without signing as I worked to specialize the software for them, then I bailed. Here I am in 2014 half over, got a customer, and now a bank is trying to extort thousands of dollars from them for canceling a contract that they are already past, but it auto-renewed.
Lessons learned: It's a lot harder to start a software company than most people think it is.
