Elderly Veteran Arrested in Middle of County Board Meeting — The Reason Why Is Making Headlines

Eddie Overholt, a 76-year-old military veteran, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after he reportedly spoke out at a county board meeting in Greenville, Tennessee.

Overholt told WATE-TV that all he did was ask Mayor Alan Broyles and other board members to speak up during the Industrial Development Board meeting on Friday because people in the audience were having a hard time hearing them.

The meeting was about a controversial new nitrogen plant in Greene County and its plans to build a pipeline to dump water into the Nolichucky River. Some people, like Overholt, have concerns over what will actually be dumped into the river.

“Eventually whatever they put in the river, we’re going to get in our wells. Knowing it’s a chemical company and a fertilizer company, we know what they put in the river,” Overholt told WATE-TV.

The elderly veteran was one of several opponents of the new plant in attendance at the meeting, where he believed they would be able to speak. When the board began “talking so low nobody could hear,” Overholt reportedly spoke up and disrupted the meeting.

It’s unclear from the footage available how much of a disturbance Overholt caused. However, he was eventually taken out of the meeting in handcuffs.

The veteran, who was jailed on a $2,000 bond, says he plans to fight the charges against him.
