Dolphy, as I understand it, there are several types of specimen gold:
crystalline gold, foil gold, wire gold, dendritic gold, octahedral gold, leaf gold, quartz gold, to name a few. Additionally, from the Ruby Adams Vase page we learn that Tiffany's highly valued Ruby gold because of its greenish hue (Spanky had previously posted a lengthy explanation of how different colorations are achieved in gold). I believe that it is because specimen gold is coveted for use in jewelry that gives it a premium value. I'm also learning a lot more about these things as I dig deeper into dd.
