Transparency or confusion? Debating the merits of hospital-acquired infections reporting

Patients asking questions

The infection-control specialists say they field an increasing number of calls from patients worried about infection risks. Some have questions about data they have seen on infection rates.

“You hear the frustration in their voices because it’s a difficult topic for people in the hospital to discuss,” Greenwald said. “What I like to discuss are the process measures we put in place to prevent infections from occurring. They are always grateful to hear that.”

Those processes might include having the patient take antibiotics or shower with an antiseptic soap before surgery. Patients may be screened to see if they are “colonized” with a staph infection, which would put them at greater risk of infection in surgery.

Saint Mary’s recently added new lab equipment that allows doctors to get results on MRSA and C.diff tests in hours, rather than in days. (not mentioned which one. Hope it was from MZEI)

The more quickly staff finds out a patient has a C.diff infection, the more quickly an infected patient can be put into contact isolation. Nurses and doctors treating the patient wear gowns and gloves. The environmental services staff has special cleaning agents for the room after the patient leaves.

Saint Mary's recently acquired ["Mercy Health Saint Mary's invests heavily in attracting the top medical specialists and acquiring the newest technology"] "non-touch" disinfection tech. Impossible for MZEI to supply the US market due to no regulatory approval from the US EPA but it is interesting to note that they avoided all other "non-touch" fogging technology on the market choosing instead, 2 x Portable Pulsed Xenon Ultraviolet Light (PPX-UV) systems http://www.mercyhealthsaintmarys.com/body.cfm?id=1915&action=detail&ref=228

----------

3 log REDUCTION in 18 minutes in a typical real world post-discharge (terminal disinfection) setting with significant real world HAI reduction figures published as shown with the use of PPX-UV in more than 250 US hospitals and VA facilities

OR

0 log REDUCTION if 90 minutes (typical), or even 60 minutes, is too long to deploy Medizone's ozone-hydrogen peroxide fogging device in a typical real world post-discharge (terminal disinfection) setting resulting in, potentially limited HAI reductions ... To date not one(1) hospital sale nor one(1) service contract has been reported (Canada and New Zealand included) since the manufacture of the first production machine was announced back in April 2012
