It's both, but consumer perception usually trumps actual need.

Diabetics learn how to avoid all or most of this stuff or suffer the consequences near term.

The rest of us can continue to waste our money on almost useless pleasures like candy, soda, beer, and cigarettes and the cumulative negative effects on our health are deferred.

In the meantime, these corporations rake in billions.
