The Toll in Gaza and Israel, Day by Day

After weeks of rising tensions following the killing of three Israeli teenagers .. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/01/world/middleeast/Israel-missing-teenagers.html .. and the apparent revenge killing of a Palestinian teenager .. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/15/world/middleeast/israeli-youths-murder-called-blueprint-for-revenge.html , Israel began a major offensive against Hamas in Gaza on July 8. The operation followed nearly a month of back-and-forth rocket attacks and airstrikes.

In Israel .. Through July 16 .. 1,241 rockets launched from Gaza .. 1 death

Four young Palestinian boys were killed in Gaza .. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/17/world/middleeast/gaza-strip-beach-explosion-kills-children.html .. when two explosions hit a jetty and beach where they were playing. Witnesses and officials said the cause was an Israeli naval or aerial attack. The boys were cousins in an extended family of fishermen who kept their boats at the fishing port of Gaza City. The first explosion left a small shack burning on the jetty. Several boys could be seen fleeing along the beach. A second blast came about 30 seconds later. When the dust cleared, three figures lay motionless on the sand. A fourth was found in the charred ruins of the shack on the jetty.
