The box has that option because some On Demand content streams in 1080p, the regular channels are only 1080i, 1080p on the live channels is a technical impossibility via cable. That said, the pictures are just fine, most of the people with a picture problem either A. bought a cheap TV, or B. bought a screen far too large for the room.

That guy pays for a standard 480p def pic and likely has a flatscreen. Standard def is designed for 4:3 (tube) TVs, and when it's stretched across a 16:9 (flatscreen) it looks awful, as it should.
