My visit to 4K Studios in Hollywood/Sonic Pool

Upon my arrival at Sonic Pool/4K Studios, I noticed that there are two entrances. Once entrance is in the back of the building where the parking lot is and the other entrance is off of Lexington. Both entrances are secure and require you to ring a bell before entering the building. Right away, I knew there was a good reason for this. I rang through the back entrance and someone opened the door for me. I checked in with the receptionist at the front desk and I was greeted by Dan Kliman (Sonic Pool/4K Studios) and Stephanie Chapman (4K Studios).

I sat with Dan and Stephanie at small conference table and the first thing we did was watch movie previews streaming via Ultraflix on the Seiki 65 inch.

It was amazing to see movies from the 80’s and 90’s converted to 4k and the Seiki panel is HUGE. I initially confused its size for 85 inches but it was the 65-inch. While previewing clips on Ultraflix, the film scanner was hard at work in background scanning reel-to-reel film into a computer. There is an in depth process of scanning that can be better understood if you listen to LX Rudis speak at the 2014 SHM. It’s a pretty sophisticated process and I got to witness part of the process first hand!!!

The film scanner literally grabs 1 frame per second and the end product is a very large (multiple terabytes) comprehensive movie file.

I couldn’t help but to notice all of the film waiting to be converted. I asked about this and learned that there was more film at studios that they will bring over when they are ready to convert them.

After previewing Ultraflix and watching the scanner in action, Dan and I discussed
the relationship between Sonic Pool and NanoTech and how important it is to be ahead of the curve and be first to market with 4K content. Dan helped me understand the relationship between Sonic Pool and NanoTech entertainment.

This is was great because the purpose of my visit was to understand the workflow between NanoTech and Sonic Pool. We received a PR back in February 2014 in regards to the relationship between NanoTech and Sonic Pool.

To refresh your memory, here is the link:

It’s one thing to read the PR and another thing to ACTUALLY SEE Sonic Pool/4K Studios in person. There are two levels to Sonic Pool. Each level has approximately 10-15 different types of Studios. The Studio capabilities range from color correcting, sound mixing, editing, titles, visual effects, DVD Authoring, and so on. Basically, if you can name any postproduction category for film, they likely do it there. Each studio was busy and all of the movie posters on the wall were blockbuster award winning films that Sonic Pool worked on in one way or another. I was not allowed to take pictures inside the Sonic Pool parts of the studio (which is totally understandable) so here are images from Sonic Pools website to verify what I actually saw inside.

There are several postproduction steps that complete a film. NanoTech/4K Studios is managing with the 4k conversions but if there is any need for postproduction that NanoTech doesn’t handle, that is where Sonic Pool comes in. They are the industry backbone and NanoTechs backbone. They are also there from a strategic business place in that they can offer 4k Conversions to films that are not shot in 4K but want to participate in the 4k space.

Sonic Pool staff is also excited about having NanoTech in their building. I met a gentleman who was working on a THX project in their elaborate THX Theater and he was excited about Sonic Pools relationship with 4k Studios.

(from PR)
SonicPool CEO John Frost said, “Partnering with NanoTech’s 4K Studios and leveraging their 4K services with our post-production services to provide state-of-the-art world-class quality digital films will allow our combined customers to receive a greater final product with improved turnaround times. We are excited to work with the NanoTech team as they build out content for their UltraFlix 4K Ultra HD channel.”

To conclude, I am very happy that NanoTechs PR is in direct alignment with what is really happening over there at 4K Studios Hollywood/Sonic Pool. To verify and get hands on experience in person is important, there is no substitute!
